A Brampton, Ontario, man was shot and killed in the parking lot of a local convenience store on Wednesday evening, said Peel Regional Police.

Video surveillance and witnesses revealed that the incident occurred on a nearby road, and a confrontation ensued after the two were seen exchanging words before a physical confrontation escalated, police said.

The victim, a 27-year-old man, went to the convenience store to purchase cigarettes, and as he was leaving the store, he was confronted by the two suspects, police said.

“One of the suspects produced a firearm and discharged multiple shots into the victim,” Peel Regional Police spokeswoman Katrina Arrogante said in a statement. “The victim collapsed on the roadway near the curb.”

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died, said police.

No one has been arrested, but police have taken several persons of interest into custody, Arrogante said.
