Ford invests $640 million to keep its growing US footprint

Ford is taking another step toward meeting its goal of sourcing 90 percent of its parts from U.S. suppliers by 2020. Today the company announced a new partnership with Globalfoundries to “assure the steady flow of the thousands of parts needed to build vehicles.”

They plan to invest an additional $650 million in Globalfoundries over the next three years and up to $640 million by 2026 to build a second campus in Saratoga County, New York, near Ford’s existing headquarters.

Ford’s overall plant footprint in the U.S. “will remain about as robust as it is today,” said CEO Jim Hackett, in a call with reporters to announce the new initiative. There are currently 12 U.S. manufacturing plants.

“Ford has always been committed to investing in our own U.S. and global manufacturing operations, and this new initiative furthers our efforts to expand manufacturing in the U.S.,” said Hackett, in a press release. “With expansion of our new campus, our continued investment in Michigan and Ohio Assembly plants, new plants in Georgia and New Mexico, and our focus on innovation, our people and vehicle portfolio will help us further lead the way in all aspects of our business, supporting sustainable and diverse communities.”

The new campus will be in the town of Lutherville and include 250-400 new jobs. The move should also help cut costs at Globalfoundries, which currently operates 13 facilities in 12 countries.

The company expects to announce additional supply chain changes to its entire design, development, manufacturing, engineering, product quality, and sales organizations by 2020, Hackett said.
